First of all, I'll have to say that neither one of these products, neither one of these platforms are better than the other. Considering that the platforms are completely different, iOS (Apple) and Android (Google). There is no clear winner on who tops one another. It all depends on what your measuring and what you value. There had been many conversations on which device is better, iOS or Android? Though, there isn't any clear answer to those debates. However, there may not be a clear answer for what device is better than the other, though there is a clear answer for which device is better for you!
It is important to have two very competitive players (iOS and Android).
Because, competition is necessary to keep platforms growing, to keep features accelerating, and to overall have good experiences.
Because if there was only one (for example: Android) that had existed. What do you think that would've happened with that one product? Most of us would've thought that it's always going to get better. But if you are not really fighting to win, in a race that never ends. Then, you'll just end up stop running.
More than anything, you need to understand that iOS and Android are two very fantastic options, which makes it incredibly difficult for consumers to decide. Both have rich eco-systems of applications, of media, of features and iOS and Android, in many ways, are the same. Though, they are also very different.
And this, more than anything, is what makes it impossible to do comparisons. You are better off comparing an iOS device against another iOS device (iPhone 5 vs iPhone 4), and one android device against another android device (Samsung Galaxy s4 vs HTC One). Because comparing iOS and Android is a bit disingenuous. The reason why is because Apple has a completely different strategy than Google. They are basically reaching the same marketplace in their different strategic ways.
iOS or Android? This question's answer is...
Better is relative. There is no overarching winner or leader. It all depends on what you're measuring and what you value. A strategy's strength is often also it's weakness in comparison to an opposite system.
